If you’re read any of my more recent maternity fashion posts, you’ll probably be aware that I’ve been struggling to get hold of clothes that fit me with my growing bump. There’s only one shop in my town that has a (small) maternity section and I’ve found ordering on line tricky. The vast majority of things I’ve ordered have had to go back because even the smallest sizes have been too big. The other thing that I’ve noticed is that the majority of maternity wear seems to be basic pieces. This has made putting together nice, more dressy outfits for the festive season a little tricky. So when these gorgeous Ruby Shoo Laura Bar Shoes * I knew they were the answer to my problems and I thought I’d share with you how I go about making a plain outfit interesting!
All products marked with * have been gifted to me for consideration. More information can be found in my full disclaimer.
So how do you go about making a plain outfit interesting? Adding an unusual element in the form of shoes, a bag or accessories is a great option! In terms of shoes, Ruby Shoo have some gorgeous shoes for just this! Whether you’re looking for something a little different or a lot different, they have a variety of options to suit all tastes and occasions.
I decided to stick to black and white for my plain outfit, as the Ruby Shoo Laura Bar Shoes are black with a red rose design. When looking at making a plain outfit interesting, I didn’t want to introduce clashing colours or patterns. This can be a great option for some people, but it just doesn’t work for me. I suspect this is partly because I find it visually difficult with my mears-irlen syndrome and photosensitivity.
The first thing I thought about was what I was going to wear on my lower half. My usual go to at this time of year is leggings or jeggings with socks and boots. But I didn’t think leggings and socks would work very well with these shoes. The double strap is a lovely feature and I wanted to show them off as much as possible. So I decided that tights would be the best way to go. I could’ve opted for jeggings and no socks, but I wanted to be a little more dressy for the meal.
I only have one skirt that fits me at the moment, my black textured Primark skirt. So I didn’t have to think too hard about this part of the outfit.
One of the things I really wanted to do with this outfit, was show my bump off. We don’t often get to see family, so the festive period might be the only time some of both Dan’s and my family get to see me pregnant. I know at least one of Dan’s sisters has been asking if I’m showing and how much. So I thought it would be nice for them if my outfit showed my bump off (not that it’s easy to hide now!). So I opted for my white maternity 1/2 sleeved t-shirt from H&M. I bought this in a size M, as my tummy button was much more visible in the S, because of the white colour of the top and the stretch. I’ve since bought other (dark) maternity t-shirts from H&M in a size S as they don’t have the same issue.
I got a gorgeous long black lacy cardigan from my parents for Christmas. So decided to wear this to add a little extra interest. I thought the holes were bigger and would show the white of the top through the black lace, but they aren’t. ANd actually, I prefer that they’re smaller than I first thought. This is quite a long, slim fit cardigan, so I was hoping that I wouldn’t need to add a belt to stop the cardigan falling over my wheels.
To add a little more interest, to the outfit, I chose my chunky red and silver necklace. I’ve had this for ages, but only recently started wearing it again. Previously, I’ve opted for red lipstick when I’ve been wearing red accessories. But for this outfit, I decided to go for a nude lip and picked MAC’s Velvet Teddy, a new addition to my makeup courtesy of the Back-To-MAC scheme.
This outfit is pretty basic. Only the pattern on the skirt and the lace cardigan give any interest at all. But when you add the Ruby Shoo Laura Bar Shoes and pop on the red necklace, the outfit is transformed!
You can find the Ruby Shoo Laura Bar Shoes on jakeshoes.co.uk for £59.99.
These shoes would also look fantastic with my black outfit with red accents.
