I can’t remember when I first came across clip lenses for phones, but I know I was instantly intrigued. So when I was offered the chance to try the Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip * I jumped at the chance! I love my camera, but it’s not always convenient when out an about. The number of times I’ve not expected to want to to take a photo, but found myself reaching for my phone is high. They’re just so convenient and the quality of photos you can get from recent phone models is phenomenal.

With Instagram apparently favouring photos taken on a phone, there seems to be an increased pressure for bloggers to perfect their phone photography. I have to say, this isn’t something I’ve personally noticed with my Instagram account. My outfit photos are all taken on my camera and imported onto my phone and they’re some of my most popular. But, I’m not sure it’s really accurate to compare photos from different genres (e.g. fashion photos taken on a camera vs. beauty photos taken with a phone). So it’s great that the Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip allows people, including bloggers, to achieve more with their smartphones.
A photo of my garden using my iPhone without any of the lenses
For reference, I’ve been testing the Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip with my iPhone 5SE. None of the photos taken on my phone have been edited, so that you can see how the lenses work as accurately as possible.
Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip: Super Wide Angle
The super wide angle lens is created by combining the macro lens and super wide lens. This threw me initially, I thought that one of the lenses was missing. Oops! After quickly checking the cardboard overlay that goes round the case, I realised that they were already put together.

I was really impressed with how much this lens widened the frame. There’s a little bit of warping around the edges of the photos, but Dan has said this is standard for wide angle lenses. I think that this is going to be the lens I get the most use out of, particularly for family group shots as Dan and I both have big families.
Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip: Macro
Initially, I didn’t quite understand the macro lens. I thought it was just going to bring everything closer to me, but as Dan explained, that’s not the case. The macro lens is for capturing tiny detail, the kind that you wouldn’t necessarily pick up with the naked eye. For example, I’ve never seen Mylo’s nose (pictured below) in such detail before! You do have to be able to get REALLY close to the subject with the macro lens. I was almost touching Mylo! To be honest, I’m surprised he let me get that close to his nose. Freya wouldn’t have done!
Mylo’s nose using the macro lens
There is a little blurring in the two photos shown because both Mylo’s nose and the leaf aren’t completely flat. This lens is so sensitive that anything even a little higher or lower than the area the lens is focussing on looks a little blurry. This is the same as you’d find when using a magnifying glass.

I would say to take the photos I’m showing of the macro lens with a pinch of salt. My PoTS is particularly bad at the moment and my palpitations mean that I really struggle to hold my phone still to take a photo. Someone without this difficulty would find it much easier to get the precision needed to take a great photo with this lens.

I’m looking forward to getting more use out of this lens post pregnancy, when we can work on getting my PoTS under control.

Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip: Fish Eye
While the fish eye style isn’t my thing, I’ve been impressed with how this lens performs. It’s a lens I’m likely to use, unless messing around with my niece. But that’s because of my personal preference rather than anything to do wit the camera lens itself.

Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip: Case
I love, love, love that the Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip comes with it’s own case. I’ve been doing a little research and I’m yet to find another clip on lens set that comes with a case! For me, this is so important. I’m much more likely to throw these clip lenses in my bag for on-the-go knowing that they’re well protected.
Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip: General Thoughts
A great little set for a good price. They clip on to my phone securely, without being too stiff to open in the first place. I love that the Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip comes with a case, perfect for on the-go and I feel like these would make a great Secret Santa present.

The only drawback I’ve found is that I needed to take off my phone cover to be able to use the clip on lenses. When I tried with my camera case on, I ended up with dark edges in the corners of the frame.
Because I’m so clumsy (damn PoTS and hEDS!), I need a case on my phone to protect it when it gets dropped. And unfortunately, I’m not able to take the case off myself because I end up hyperextending and really hurting my fingers. So to be able to test out these lenses, Dan had to take my case off for me and I’ve had to be really careful about how, where and when I use my phone just incase I drop it.
Hopefully this gives you an idea of the thickness of my phone case and the distance it took the lens away from the iPhone’s camera
I’m yet to come up with a solution to this, but I suspect it would be less of an issue for people who are able to remove their phone cases easily.
Have you tried the Olixar 3-in-1 Universal Camera Lens Clip? How did you get on with it?
