Smashbox Full Exposure Palette Review

The Smashbox Full Exposure palette is one that’s been an underrated product in my collection for too long. I’ve dipped into it every now & again, but not given it the love that it deserves. But something changed. I’m not sure what it was, but when packing to go to Center Parcs, I just knew that there was no other palette that I wanted to take away with me.

Smashbox Full Exposure Palette Review

The Smashbox Full Exposure palette is made up of 14 shadows. The middle two shades are neutral, the shadows on the left are warm toned & the right side is cool toned. This makes it a very versatile palette & the perfect option for me to take away with me. The top row of shadows are glitter/shimmer & the bottom row are matte.

Smashbox Full Exposure Palette Review

The palette has a nice mirror & comes with a double ended brush. One side is a fluffy brush, which Smashbox suggest for use with the matte shades. The other side of the brush is a split fibre brush. Smash box suggest using this for the glitter/shimmer shades, the black side if you want to use the glitter shadows wet for more impact & the white side to use them dry. However, it looks like the brush for the Smashbox Full Exposure palette has been changed since I bought mine.

The packaging is cardboard, with a magnetic closure. This can make it difficult to travel with, as it could easily open in your bag. I got round this by laying it down at the bottom of my makeup bag & putting other products on top of it. Then packing my makeup bag securely in my suit case. I wouldn’t fly with this palette, as you never know which way up your suitcase will end up!

Matte shadows swatched

The matte shadows in the Smashbox Full Exposure palette are soft & east to blend. As you can see from the swatches you get a good amount of pigment where my finger started, but on the lighter shades there isn’t much product left when Swiping my finger down. You may have to layer up the matte shades to get the effect you want. Saying this, the matte shadows do blend nicely.

Shimmer/glitter shadows swatched dry

The shimmer/glitter shadows initially disappointed me. When used dry, I found them quite sheer. These shadows give a similar effect to the MAC Pressed Pigments. I’m much happier with the effect these give with them wet, but I find the Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadows & the Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eyeshadows give a better effect. If you’re after a subtle glitter, this palette is great. If you want something with more punch to it, then you’d be better off with either Urban Decay or Bobbi Brown.

Shimmer/glitter shadows swatched wet

I found that some of the glitter shadows are more pigmented than others. I noticed particularly that S5 (the first of the cool toned glitter/shimmer shades) is not as pigmented or shimmery as it’s warm toned equivalent, M3. When using the glitter/shimmer shades wet, I’ve had very little fall out.

Natural cool toned eye look using shades from the Smashbox Full Exposure Palette

The palette comes with an eye shape chart. This gives suggestions as to how to apply your shadows to best flatter your eyes. The chart is a great addition for anyone who is new to makeup or a little unsure of how to make the most of this palette. The palette also comes with a mini mascara. You can read my review of this in my Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara Review post.

Neutral glittery eye look using the Smashbox Full Exposure Palette

Update: I’ve since found that applying the glitter shadows with my finger gives a much more pigmented pay off. As a result, I’m now completely in love with this palette!

  • I have this palette, my friend bought it for me a couple of years ago and I love it, I haven’t used it for a while though so I will be getting it out again, I have vowed to sort through my makeup whilst sitting on the sofa recovering from my surgery so I must do that asap, the looks you created are lovely xx

    • I’m glad my post has inspired you to pull this palette out again! Sorting through makeup sounds like the perfect rest activity while you recover. I need to go through mine too, but I think my wardrobe needs sorting first! Xx

  • I have this palette but just don’t use it despite loving the look of the shadows! I love the 3 looks you’ve created xx

    • It’s so hard to use all of the palettes we love when we have so many to choose from, isn’t it!?! I’m so glad you like the three looks, thank you! Xx

  • Beautiful looks! Great review, I think I prefer the Urban Decay palettes as you’re right these don’t seem to pack much of a punch. It does seem like a nice neutral palette though and I love the colours in it, thank you for sharing xxx

    • Thank you so much! I LOVE my Urban Decay palettes, they have such amazing shades that are beautiful to work with. I do like that this palette has glitters in, which Urban Decay don’t tend to and when they do it’s just one or two. The only problem is that these are subtle, which is great for day-to-day, but not really what you want from a glittery shadow. Maybe that’s why they are marketed as ‘shimmers’ rather than glitters. Xx

This palette looks quite lovely, and I’ve heard some good things about it! I like the neutral shades and how versatile they seem, although honestly, I’m not sure how much use I’d get out of a palette like this myself. I already have quite a few casual palettes that I like, and these shades are so subtle that I’m not sure whether I’d actually reach for them that much. Really appreciate your honest thoughts on this, lovely! xoxo

    • It is a nice palette, but there’s no point in adding it to your collection if you have others that you can use to create similar looks. I didn’t have many matte shades before I picked this palette up, so that was one of my main motivations for getting it. I also thought the glittery shades would give more payoff, so they were a little disappointing initially. I’m happier with them now I know to use them wet. Xx

I think it looks lovely ! A balance of matte and shimmery shades. Smashbox just released new palettes in collaboration with Shay Mitchell. I am so excited to get my hands on those. Lovely post x

    • It’s so nice to have the balance of warm and cool, matte and shimmer shades. I haven’t see the Shay Mitchell palette yet, I’ll have to check it out! Xx

  • That’s such a beautiful variety of shades, the looks are gorgeous

    • It’s such a versatile palette! I’m so glad you like the looks, thank you! Xx

  • I’ve always felt like this palette was too cool toned for me since I have more warm skin…but I love the look you created! It’s in between natural and glam.

    • Thank you so much! If you like warm tones, you’d love shades 1-4. It’s whether you’d get much use out of 5-7 though, as it isn’t ideal buying a 14 pan palette to only use 8 of the shades. Xx

  • What an awesome palette! I love the look you created! =)
