Maternity fashion has been a source of frustration for me in recent weeks. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on pieces that will only last me a few months, sizing is bizarre and there’s only one shop locally that has a maternity section. I recently placed an order with Debenhams for a Christmas present, but wasn’t spending enough to qualify for delivery (and click and collect wasn’t an option). So I browsed the maternity section, spotted a sale and added a few bits to my basket – expecting that they’d all have to be returned. And while the other items did have to be sent back, I fell in love with the fit of this Dorothy Perkins Maternity Body Con Dress! But the question was, what to wear with purple?
I really struggled to decide whether to keep this dress or not. The fit is great, and that’s something I’ve really struggled with in maternity wear. But, I struggled to think of what to pair with purple. Eventually, the fit won over the colour and I decided to put my thinking cap on and come up with some colour combinations that work well with purple.
What To Wear With Purple? Black
I was initially a little concerned about pairing this deep a purple shade with black. I thought it would be too much. But, the addition of the white spots in the black scarf give the outfit a lightness that otherwise it might be missing. Because of the length of the dress, I opted for my black ankle boots and tights to give texture and break up the space between the boots and the dress. This black jacket gives a smart option, but a black cardigan would work just as well.
What To Wear With Purple? Brown
It wasn’t until I Googled ‘what to pair with purple’ and a purple dress with brown accessories popped up that I considered this combination. I don’t know why, because I love it! While I don’t have a brown cardigan, I do have a brown belt that helps keep my cardigan from falling open over my wheelchair wheels. I’ve also added my brown New Look boots, and a cream and brown polka dot scarf. This is probably my favourite outfit of the lot.
What To Wear With Purple? Silver/Grey
Another colour that works well with purple but I hadn’t thought about was silver/grey. This was a suggestion made to me by a lady I got chatting to on the market stall where I bought both my polka dot scarves. The only think I would say with this is to be a little bit careful with the shade of silver or grey you opt for. I’ve a grey scarf that’s a little blue in tone and this really doesn’t work against my purple dress. I’m yet to find a silver/grey item in my wardrobe that I feel works with my purple dress, but I thought I’d share the colour combination as an option.
What To Wear With Purple? Yellow
Purple and yellow are a great combination. I have a gorgeous scarf with yellow in it that would look lovely with this dress, if it didn’t also have burgundy running through the pattern. To show you how the colour combination works, I’ve added my New Look Cross Back Mustard Jumper* over the top of my purple body con dress. I wasn’t expecting to love this outfit, but the addition of the cream/brown scarf and the brown boots really pull the look together!
What To Wear With Purple? Teal/Mint
I’m not going to lie, I didn’t think this would be a combination I was likely to wear. To me this purple dress is an autumn/winter option and the scarf is giving me all the spring/summer vibes. But, when I added the brown boots and black cardigan, it pulled the look together and made it much more cold weather appropriate. Teal is another great choice with purple too. You might have noticed that these are the colours in my blog’s logo, designed by the very talented Kelly from thevegantaff.com!
I used to wear quite a lot of purple, as it goes well with the green tints in my precision tinted lenses. I’m not really sure why I stopped and after buying this body con dress and thinking about good combinations to go with it, I’m going to be incorporating more purple into my wardrobe again.
What do you wear with purple? Which of these colour combinations is your favourite?
