Banana powders have had a moment recently (well the last few years). It’s been great to see the high street embracing this and bringing out affordable alternatives to the high end options. I’ve heard great things about the Ben Nye Banana Powder, but because of the price and having to order online, I’ve held off buying it. I like being able to swatch things and was concerned that the banana powder would be too strong a yellow shade for my skin. Today, I’m excited to bring you my thoughts on the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder *, an affordable option that you can pick up on the high street!

One of the things that intrigued me the most about the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder, is that it’s a 2-in-1 product. Not only is it a mattifying setting powder, it’s also be designed to be used as a primer.
As an under eye setting powder, I was really impressed with the finish the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder gave. I have dry under eyes, that can often make concealer look less than flawless in texture. But this powder blurred the imperfections in my concealer application and left a soft, supple look to the skin. I’ve not tried many setting powders, but this is the first that has given this blurring quality, which I really like! Not even the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder helped the unevenness that my dry under eyes create.
Unfortunately, the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder’s ‘hint of yellow’ that’s supposed to ‘magically suit almost any skin tone’ is too strong/bright a yellow for my light skin, despite me having yellow undertones. My main concern with trying a banana powder has been realised.
Saying this, I can usually make the colour of the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder work for me as an under eye setting powder. And it does give a little extra coverage to my concealer, which for me is a big bonus. But, I have to be very careful not to get any of the powder directly below my dark circles. Otherwise, it looks like I’ve put a ring of yellow eyeshadow under my eyes – not attractive!
The concept of a powder primer is a bit of an alien one to me. All the beauty gurus on YouTube seem to say that you should put powder on after your cream/liquid products not before. I don’t know why this has stuck with me and made me nervous of using the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder as a primer. After all, I use my MAC MSF Natural as a base and then put cream blusher on top of it! It’s so silly the things that stick in our heads and affect how we view things.
I did try the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder as a primer under my MAC MSF Natural, but unfortunately, I had to remove my makeup and start all over again. The powder attached itself to the patches of flaky, dry skin on my face. These then looked even worse with my MAC MSF Natural over the top. I suspect this is largely because the powder is coloured. I’d be intrigued to see if I have the same experience with the translucent version.
The packaging of the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder is something I’ve been very impressed with. If you’ve read my review of the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder (linked above), you’ll know that I’m clumsy. This makes using loose powders difficult. I regularly drop things and as a result have wasted a significant amount of the Laura Mercier powder. Just a moment ago, I dropped one remote control on top of another and the TV suddenly went off. Who know’s what I’ve done or how to fix it!

The GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder has a cover keeping to powder contained. This cover stops the powder from going everywhere. And all you have to do is turned it to reveal the small holes that let the powder out! So the chances of you dropping the powder and spilling it are much slimmer than with other loose powder packaging.
Despite the colour not being ideal for me, I love the quality and finish of the GOSH Prime N Set Banana Powder itself, when used as a setting powder. So while I wouldn’t repurchase the Banana powder shade, I’d definitely pick up the translucent version.

That is so interesting that this banana powder can be used as a primer! I like how it doesn’t emphasize dry texture, because that’s my problem when I set my dark circle concealer. I can see this working for me with my tan and warm skin though. I would get this if we had it available!

Great post! I was intrigued by the fact that it can be used as a primer as well as a setting powder. Since you did not like it as a primer I get it, but it is good to have a nice inexpensive option as a setting powder that will blur the imperfections under the eye. :-)
