NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray Review

If you’ve been around these parts for a while, you might know that I absolutely LOVE the Urban Decay settings sprays. Particularly the Chill (previously Dew Me) version. However, when money is tight, sometimes you have to try cheaper alternatives. I’d heard great things about the NYX setting sprays and had a Boots gift voucher from my birthday. So when my Urban Decay setting Spray started to run low, I decided to pick up the NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray.

Having heard rave reviews from so many people, I had really high hopes for the NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray. And as a makeup fixing product, it did work well. My makeup stayed in place nicely and the spray took away the slightly powdery look I sometimes get with my MAC MSF Natural. All good so far.

Unfortunately, I experienced one big problem with the NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray – It felt like I’d applied hairspray to my face. It was uncomfortable to the point of being painful! This was particularly noticeable when layering the spray (using it after my base and again once I finish my makeup).

While the Chill setting spray from Urban Decay is my favourite, I’ve owned and used all three of the brand’s setting sprays and enjoyed them all. Even All Nighter, the less dry-skin friendly of the bunch caused no problems for my dry, eczema prone skin. So it’s disappointing that the NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray made my face feel tight and almost like it was cracking – as though I’d sprayed hairspray onto it. I’ve never experienced this with an Urban Decay spray.

Now, it is worth noting that my skin is particularly dry at the moment. This is always the case during the colder months and has been even more of an issue while I’ve been pregnant. However, I tried using the sample size bottle of my Urban Decay setting spray (that I keep in my bag), after experiencing tightness from the NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray to see if my skin was the issue. I had no problems with the Urban Decay spray, even though my skin is being particularly problematic at present.

Once my skin is a little more hydrated, I’ll be cautiously continuing to use my NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray until it’s finished. But, I won’t be repurchasing this setting spray. For now, I’ll be using the sample size bottle of my Urban Decay setting spray, until my skin returns to ‘normal’.

The NYX Dewy Finish Spray is available from Boots.com for £7 for a 60ml bottle. NYX also have a matte version available.

The NYX setting spray costs £11.67 for 100ml, while the Urban Decay setting sprays cost £20.34 for 100ml. Despite this price difference, I’ll be reverting back to my trusty Urban Decay setting sprays once this is used up. After all, if it ‘ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Have you tried the NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray? How did you get on with it?

If you’ve also tried the Urban Decay setting sprays, I’d love to know how you felt they compared.
