Yesterday saw the launch of the long awaited Urban Decay Naked Smoky palette & I thought I would share my initial feelings on it with you, as well as swatches!
Let’s look at the packaging first. The magnets that hold the Urban Decay Naked Smoky palette closed are strong enough to resist a small amount of force, but not too strong that it is difficult to open. I don’t think I would be comfortable travelling with this palette without a hairband round it to add a little extra security. The smoke design on the front is different on each palette. I like this touch, as it adds a little individuality. I’m sure there will be repeats of patterns, but it’s nice to know that the one you get is just a little different from the one your friend has.
The palette comes with a double ended brush. I really like the brushes that the Naked palettes come with & am impressed with the inclusion of a pencil brush. I love the design that has been included on the middle part of the brush.
The palette contains a mix of shades, both cool & warm, as well as a mix of finishes. I usually prefer it when the palettes are laid out with the lighter shades on the left, moving to the dark shades on the right. The Urban Decay Naked Smoky palette starts with light shimmers, moving to dark shimmers, then dark mattes, followed by light mattes. I actually find this layout quite helpful when putting a look together.
The shades are:
- High (cream shimmer with micro-glitter)
- Dirtysweet (medium bronze)
- Radar (metallic taupe with iridescent micro-glitter)
- Armor (metallic silver-taupe with tonal sparkle)
- Slanted (light metallic gray)
- Dagger (medium charcoal with micro-shimmer)
- Black Market (jet-black satin)
- Smolder (deep plum-taupe)
- Password (cool taupe matte)
- Whiskey (rich brown matte)
- Combust (soft pink-taupe)
- Thirteen (light beige satin).
The shimmer shades swatch beautifully, whilst the mattes give great pay off on direct application, but don’t blend quite as well as the shimmer shades, which you can see from the swatches.

I love the look of this, but I just don’t feel like I need it! I’m happy with my 3 naked palettes and feel I can get a similar smokey look using a combo of the cooler shades they have (particularly the naked 2)

I like hearing this Kat! So often people go crazy over the new releases & forget the products that they already have. I don’t have your skills at putting combinations together (though I wish I did!) so have no idea how I’d get similar looks with the other 3! Ooo… there’s an idea – would you do a tutorial on your YuTube channel please? I know a lot of people would find it useful. Xx
I havent got any of the Naked palettes so this may be the first from the range of eyeshadows that I buy! I love the colours in the palette and the way it is laid out, however I will definitely need to save as it does come with quite a hefty price tag! xx

It is a beautiful palette Lauren. I was shopping with a friend when I picked it up & she bought it too as her 1st Naked palette. I love the shade range & definitely the way it has been laid out. Using it has been so easy to put looks together – I’m someone who normally struggles with shade combinations so stick to the same looks but I think I’ll be able to experiment more with this one! Xx
I’ve got the Naked One but smoky always speaks to me! I’m still mulling this over because I feel like it has a lot of similar shades to the other palettes but then it does have more mattes and more greys. And that GORGEOUS purple. See what’s happening, I’m talking myself into it now haha! I blame you!

Haha Oh Suzy! I know what you mean about the some of the shades being similar to the other palettes, but actually I think High is the only shade that I would say is dupeable in one of the other palettes. The grey tones are a definite plus. I feel like, although Naked 2 is supposed to be the cooler of the palettes, I would class it as being the neutral, with Naked 1 being warm toned. If you do pick it up let me know what you think! Xx
I have the Naked 1 but was never really tempted by the 2 or 3 – I will have to go and have a swatch of the new one as I love the packaging xx

Ooo… Do! It’s gorgeous! Dirtysweet is everything I wanted Half Baked to be. I looked at the palette & it seemed to pull more cool toned, but I’ve just put together a warm, natural look! Let me know your thoughts if you pick it up! Xx
Great review and I love the gorgeous look you’ve created! Although I adore the packaging of this palette and have all three of the others, I just haven’t been as excited about the release of this one. I love Urban Decay, but I think the novelty of the Naked palettes is wearing off for me, now that other brands are starting to bring their versions out. I say this now, but I probably will cave and purchase it, in a month or two!

Thanks Alice! I didn’t think I’d love this palette quite as much as I do. It rivals my Naked 2, which is my favourite & most used of the 3! I completely agree with you that there is less of an urge to purchase the Naked palettes with the dupes that are now available. With the quality & variety available now, I think if I was a teen at the moment, I wouldn’t buy a single high end product in my life! If you do cave, let me know what you think! Xx
I have the first palette which I adore, but I cannot say that I feel the need to go and get another one of their palettes at the moment even though this one does look really good. One thing that has deffo improved is the quality of packaging, who on earth created the velvet style case for the first one was crazy!

I completely agree with you about the packaging Lou! The reason my first Naked palette was 2 instead of 1 was partly due to the packaging, as I have a thing about velvet – the feel of it makes me shudder! Xx

Yay! I’m so with you on collecting the palettes – I’ve all the Book Of Shadows, All the Vice palettes & the Naked 1, 2, 3 & Smoky. I didn’t get the Naked basics palettes though, as I prefer shimmery shadows as they show through my glasses better. I think this is one of the reasons I love Urban Decay shadows so much as they do shimmer shadows beautifully! Xx
I actually bought this as my first naked palette with a £10 off voucher so I was extremely happy about having it in my life haha. It is a lovely palette though and it’s definitely one to pull out on a night out or something! xxxx

I have the basics one which was a gift. I actually found a couple to be really chalky. Glad to see you liked this palette :)

Such a shame that you found some of the shades in the Basics palette chalky. I find matte shadows are much more likely to be harder to work with. I’m not really sure why. I’ve not found this to be the case with any of the matte shadows in my Urban Decay palettes, but that may be because the majority of the shadows aren’t matte. Xx
