Brake Failure By Alison Brodie

There aren’t many books that I read more than once, but Brake Failure by Alison Brodie* is definitely an exception for me. With my dyslexia, Mears-Irlen Syndrome and the concentration difficulties I have because of my chronic illnesses, reading can be challenging at times. Contemporary romance novel, Brake Failure captivated me from start to finish. Keep reading for my review!

Have you ever felt trapped by social convention? Wanting to break free? This is the situation protagonist Ruby finds herself in.

Ruby was brought up to take her place in society. To marry well and be the perfect wife, hosting dinner parties and entertaining guests. Growing up, she was tortured by her step-sister, who made her feel inferior in every way. But Ruby thinks she finally has something that will make her jealous. Living in Paris is something Ruby’s step-sister has always wanted, but it’s Ruby who will be going. Or at least that’s what she thinks.

Instead of Paris, Ruby ends up in Kansas. With a husband she doesn’t love, a life that she doesn’t want and a chance to break free. So prim and proper Ruby turns wild child. But is this such a bad thing? Will Ruby’s run-ins with the law lead her to her Mr. Right?

The chapters in Brake Failure switch between present day and the events that led up to it. I really like this format of writing. It really adds an extra layer of interest to the book. You know what the outcome is, but you don’t know the events that have lead up to it. And you definitely want to find out!

The character of Ruby was well written. It felt like she was a friend, even though I don’t think I’d end up friends with a loose cannon like Ruby. Throughout the book, I wanted to shake some sense into her. Ruby was written in such a way that made me care about her enough to want to step in and help her, as her friend.

Sherif Hank Gephart was also a very well written character. I loved the raw connection he and Ruby had. The way their emotions for each other confuse them both really added to the storyline and made me want to keep reading to find out what happens between them and if they ever get together.

I would highly recommend reading Brake Failure. After finishing it, I missed the characters and wanted to start the book again. I’ve never felt this way about a book before and will definitely be reading more of Alison Brodie’s novels as a result!
