GOSH Velvet Touch Matt Lipstick Review

As someone with dry lips, I find it hard to wear matte lipsticks. They tend to highlight flakes, even those that aren’t visible without makeup on! I also find matte lipsticks tend to dry my lips out further, but one matte lipstick that I’ve been impressed with is the GOSH Velvet Touch Matt Lipstick *.

There are 12 shades in the GOSH Velvet Touch Matt Lipstick line. I have two of these; 9, Sweetness* & 10, Smoothie*. Sweetness is a light baby pink & Smoothie is a mid toned, rose shade.

I found both shades really comfortable to wear, which is huge for me with a matte lipstick! I didn’t experience any drying at all, which I was very pleased about. I found that Sweetness & Smoothie both wore well on me. Both shades lasted through a meal with their colour, though faded, still on my lips evenly. I found that Smoothie went on beautifully, without showing up the dry patches on my lips & was highly pigmented. This is everything I want in a matte lipstick! Unfortunately on my dry lips, Sweetness felt like it had less pigmentation to it. It showed up the dry patches on my lips & I felt that I had to apply a few swipes to get the colour payoff I was after.

I went into my local Superdrug to swatch all of the shades. I wanted to see if Sweetness & Smoothie were representative of the light & dark shades of the Velvet Touch Matt line, or if one of them was different to the rest. From what I can tell from one swipe of each lipstick on my arm, it looks like it’s only the lightest two shades (1 & 9) that are less pigmented than the rest of the shades. I didn’t get to try them on my lips, but I would assume from this that these two shades are going to be more likely to show up flakes too. I’ve found that Sweetness can be built up to give more colour payoff. It’s likely this will be the case for the other light shade, but the more I applied the more visibly Sweetness clung to my dry patches. Looking back as I edit the photos, I can also see that Sweetness has settled into the fine lines of my lips, something that Smoothie hasn’t done.

As someone with dry lips, I will definitely be buying more of shades from this formula. I was blown away by the shade Smoothie, it’s probably the best matte lipstick I’ve ever tried! I’m much more likely to pick up a bold, dark colour in a matte formula than I am a lighter shade, so Sweetness being less impressive than Smoothie isn’t something that bothers me. It’s just worth being aware that if showed up my dry patches & the shade 1 is likely to as well if, like me, you have dry lips. Shade 4 is high on my wish list for the summer months & I was especially impressed with shade 6 when I swatched it. GOSH are a cruelty free brand, which is a huge bonus. I want to support more brands that don’t test on animals.

One of the things I love about GOSH as a brand are that *most* of their ingredients are available on the Superdrug website. This is super helpful for people with allergies, as ingredients aren’t always available when you’re in store. Sometimes this is purely because a customer has picked them up & left them half way over the other side of the shop. For an allergy sufferer like me, this can make it impossible to buy a product, so knowing that I can jump onto the internet to find the information I need is unbelievably helpful!
