Huck's American Bar & Grill Review

I’ve you’ve been around these parts for a while, you probably know that I have allergies. Lots of allergies. In addition, I’m on the Low-FODMAP diet for my IBS. On top of this, I’ve been having difficulty with dysphagia, the cause of this is still unknown. As you can probably imaging, these things makes eating out difficult. Dan & I recently went to Center Parcs Woburn, so I wanted to share a review of the place we ate at the most, Huck’s American Bar & Grill.

If I write more food reviews or recipes, this is something I’ll be working on. Huck’s American Bar & Grill is a chain of restaurants exclusive to Center Parcs visitors. This isn’t the first Huck’s American Bar & Grill I’ve been to. When we stayed at Longleaf, we ate at Huck’s every night. There were other places that I would’ve been able to eat, but the food was so good that we couldn’t bear to venture elsewhere. So we were very excited to relive the experience when we went to Woburn. I have to admit, I was also a little nervous. What if the food wasn’t as good as Longleat?

We went to Center Parcs for three reasons, to eat, sleep & swim. So it was very important that the food was top quality. I’m very pleased to say that the three meals we had Huck’s American Bar & Grill were to the same high standard that we experienced at Longleat.

We booked all of our meals in advance to avoid disappointment. Unfortunately on our first night we had difficulty doing this. A halloween party was taking place, so when ended up with a 9:30pm reservation when we were able to book. The reason for this was something about not being able to book on arrival days. Or not being able to book until later in the day. I’m not really sure, I got a little confused! There were a few different ways we could book our table. Center Parcs have an app, which you can make reservations on, there are a number of booking points around the village, you can visit customer services or you can go into the restaurant itself.

When we arrived on the first night, we found that the main section of Huck’s American Bar & Grill was lit in part by a green light in the ceiling. The staff were very understanding about my photosensitivity & seated us in the family area. This had a green light along the wall, but I was able to sit with my back to this.

The last night we ate at Huck’s American Bar & Grill, we had further problems with the lighting. We booked to sit in a booth to avoid the green light & move away from the noise of the family area. I think the only reason we weren’t offered this area before is that it’s not somewhere I could sit if I stayed in my wheelchair. Dan & I both agreed that transferring from my wheelchair & sitting in an adult area with suitable lighting would be the best option, so booked this.

Unfortunately, when we arrived the Christmas lights have been put up & turned on. There was no way I would’ve been able to manage the booth area with the twinkling lights that were in the area. The staff were once again, very understanding & seated us in the family area. Unfortunately, to face away from the twinkling Christmas lights would’ve meant that I had to face the green light on the wall. It was at this point that the member of staff seating us offered to turn the green lighting off. We weren’t aware that this was possible, so were very grateful that she took the initiative & made sure I was safe & comfortable.

In terms of food, I had a choice of two dishes. This may not sound like much, but usually when we eat out there’s only one thing on the menu that I can safely order. The first & third nights, I ordered the 10oz Flat Iron Steak. The second night, I ordered the Grilled half chicken. I didn’t have to order either dishes without elements, which is always nice. The only things I couldn’t eat were the rocket salad & the sauce. I only have problems when I eat salad, so having it on the plate is fine. The sauce came in a separate pot, so I ordered it specifically for Dan. I’m certain that if I had needed to order my meal without certain elements that this would’ve have been a problem.

On returning from holiday, I found out that there is a gluten free menu available (though gluten free & wheat free are not the same things).

There is only one word to describe my meal on each of the three nights, amazing. The meat was tender, flavoursome & beautifully cooked. I often find with steaks that chefs have different views on how well steak should be cooked. Each of my medium steaks were perfectly cooked. Not a drop of blood in sight. The seasoned fries had a little bit of a kick to them. Think Peri salt type of an impact. They had less of a smoky taste to them than Nando’s peri chips. This is the best comparison I can make. I can honestly say that the steak at Huck’s American Bar & Grill, was the best I’ve ever tasted.

Huck’s American Bar & Grill has a fantastic atmosphere & friendly, helpful staff. It offers a variety of snacks & appetisers, wings, fajitas, burgers, ribs ‘n’ grills, hot dogs (one of Dan’s favourites), salads & ‘American classics’. There is a separate kids menu, as well as a menu catering for those who are gluten free, lactose free & vegan. As well as the family area, it also has a dedicated bar.

In August 2018, Dan and I went back to Center Parcs Woburn and had four wonderful meals at Huck’s. Their menu has been revamped to include some fantastic free from options. They also have a tablet specifically set up for people to check the ingredients of their meals before ordering! If you want to know more about this and what we had to eat, check out my vlog!
