Styling A Long Camel Gilet

On Friday, I headed to Dan’s department’s Christmas work meal. I spent the week before deciding what to wear, and thought I would share my choice with you. To give you some context, the Christmas meal took place at Nando’s, so I tried to make my outfit smart casual. I was really pleased to finally settle on this long camel gilet.

This outfit was inspired by Rhianne and the outfit she wore to the Blogger’s Love Gossip Girl event.

The long camel gilet is one I picked up from Primark. I actually feel that it’s a little big, even though its’ a size S. I don’t like the look of the long camel gilet worn on it’s own, it feels like there’s something missing and isn’t very shapely. A belt soon sorts this out. The belt I’ve chosen is from a 2 pack from Primark. I love the detail of the belt loop, it works particularly well with this outfit.

Underneath the long camel gilet, I’m wearing a black long sleeved t-shirt and my black yoga pants. Initially, I wanted to wear a black skirt over the yoga pants to cover my tree trunk thighs (thanks Mum!). I tried this, but my short black skirt was only slightly longer than the long camel gilet. This didn’t look right, so I gave up on the skirt idea and decided to work on feeling more comfortable in my own body instead.

Because I would be sing my wheelchair all day and not needing to stand or walk at all, I decided to wear a peak of heels! This is massive for me. The last time I wore heels was my wedding day five and a half years ago. Even then they were only kitten heels, because I hadn’t been able to wear heels proper for a few years.

The heels I chose were a pair of black boots from New Look. I bought these MANY years ago. I actually found that wearing heels and using my wheelchair was more comfortable than wearing flats. I’ve found that I can’t put my feet flat on my foot plate, so end up on tiptoes. When wearing flats, my ankles and the arches aren’t supported, but in heels they are! I need to play around to find out which heel types work best. I’m not sure a stiletto will have enough surface area to work, but we shall see.

I wore my black floppy hat from H&M. I’m not sure if it’s the same, but there is a similar one available on hm.com. Not only does this hat look great with my outfit, it also really helps with the photosensitivity I experience with my basilar type and hemiplegic migraine. You can read more about the difficulties I face at Christmas in my photosensitivity and flashing Christmas lights post.

As I had gold detail on my belt, I decided to use my Forever21 black cross body bag with gold hardware. When standing, this bag is quite heavy because of the metal strap and the main body of the bag. But when it’s resting on my lap, the weight of the chain on it’s own is absolutely fine. I love the details on this bag, I think they help dress the outfit up.

To finish my outfit, I added this gold an black statement necklace. I don’t often wear statement necklaces as they can be too heavy for me. I manage this one with minimal neck ache and thing it put the perfect touch to the outfit. Unfortunately, I can’t remember where I bought it.

What do you think of how I styled my long camel gilet? Is it an outfit you’d wear?

  1. I love how you belted the gilet! It looks so chic, especially since the belt has the cool gold details :) That’s crazy that this is your first time wearing heels in such a long time! That’s awesome that you’ll start wearing them more since they work well with your wheelchair :) A stiletto seems very dramatic but perhaps block heels would work out well? And since they’re so trendy there will be plenty of options!

    • Thank you so much! I think you’re right, a thicker heel like these boots have would be better. I think a stiletto is more likely to slip off my foot plate because of it’s smaller surface area. I’m so excited to have a rummage through my heels and get them all out again! I’ll have to get Dan to take me out for a few dinners so I can wear them all. Xx
