5 Ways To Support Charity Without Spending A Penny

Supporting charities is a great thing to do. There are so many different charities out there that I really do feel there is something to get behind for everyone. Personally, I think that everyone should support a charity in one way or another. This can be daunting though & I think there is still a feeling that supporting charity = giving money. Not everyone can or wants to do this & that’s ok. There are ways of supporting charities that either don’t involve financial commitment, or only involve a very small amount. So today I thought I would share with you some of the ways you can support charity without spending a penny (or only spending a few).

Volunteer

This is probably the most obvious one. You could volunteer in a charity shop, become a cub or guide leader & run meetings, drive people to their hospital appointments if you have a local volunteer service in your area or hold a bring-&-buy or jumble sale, there are so many other ways to volunteer. Don’t want to leave the comfort of your own home? Have you thought about volunteering on the social media team for your favourite charity? What about writing articles for their newsletter or magazine? I’m not able to get out of the house without help at the moment, but am greatly enjoying the writing I have been doing for Migraine Action’s quarterly magazine (did you catch my Botox & photosensitivity articles?), as well as the work I’m doing as part of the Hypermobility Syndrome Association’s social media team.

Donate Your Unwanted Items To Charity Shops

While you could make a little money by selling your unwanted items, donating them to a charity shop doesn’t cost you anything. Charity shops will take a wide variety of items, including books, DVDs, clothes. household items & even mobile phones! Plus, with a large number of charities having shops it’s easy to donate to a cause you are passionate about.

Save Stamps For Charities To Recycle

This is a lesser known way of supporting charity. Some charities collect used stamps. These are recycled & the profits go to the charity. The Hypermobility Syndrome Association, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds & Macmillan Cancer Support all collect stamps for recycling. There are many more charities that do, which you can find by Googling ‘stamps for charity’. This will take up very little of your time & only cost you the price of a stamp, which the charity can then recycle. This is great as not only are you helping a charity, you’re also saving the planet too!

Active Kids Vouchers

If you do your food shop at Sainsbury’s, they run an annual Active Kids scheme where you can collect vouchers against the price of your shop for schools who can then trade these for equipment. All too often these go to waste. People don’t know a school collecting vouchers so turn them down at the till. PLEASE DON’T DO THIS!!!!! If you don’t know a school who are collecting vouchers, Sainsbury’s provide a search tool on the Active Kids webpage for you to search. No one in your area collecting vouchers? Look further afield. After finding a school to take your vouchers all it will take is for you to pop them in an envelop & send them to the school. For the price of a stamp, you could be making the difference between whether the school can get a piece of equipment or not!

Shop Via A Third Party

Some charities, such as the Hypermobility Syndrome Association receive money when you shop via a third party such as The Giving Machine. All you have to do is log on the The Giving Machine (or other third party website) & click through to your chosen online store. Your nominated charity will receive a percentage from your total spend & it won’t cost you a penny!

  1. This is a great post!! I have just started volunteering at the Marie Curie charity shop on a wednesday afternoon (and I can also see they are going to make money out of me because you know I get first pick of the clothes and that!) But I had never heard of the giving machine!

    • Thanks Charlotte! That sounds great & yes, they’ll definitely be making money out of you. It’ll be good to get first pick of things. I really hope you’re enjoying it. I hadn’t heard of The Giving Machine either until I started volunteering for the HMSA! Xx

  2. hi Tania, great post! I am working with a leading UK charity at the moment, looking for bloggers to come on board and blog against poverty. Would you be interested in joining?

    many thanks,

    Sophie

  3. These are such good ideas! Some I linked as helping a charity! I’m sure I have many things I could donate as well, thanks for reminding me :)

    • Thank you so much! Sometimes it feels so hard to support charity when you don’t have any money yourself. Even donating can be challenging, as selling would bring your in a little money. But with a little creative thinking, finances needn’t be a barrier. Xx
