Top 5 Traditional Christmas Songs

Music is one of the things that really make Christmas for me. As it’s the last post before Christmas, I thought I would share with you my top 5 traditional Christmas songs. If you prefer more contemporary music, check out my top 5 Christmas pop songs!

I Saw Three Ships

This carol is believed to originate from the Victorian era. This song reminds me of play school. I can’t remember if I sang it, of if I watched my younger sister sing it in the Christmas nativity. I think I sang it. This reminds me of my childhood, which is why I love it so much!

Deck The Halls With Boughs Of Holly

This carol is believed to be Welsh in origin from the sixteenth century tune ’Nos Galan’. This carol epitomises the festive season to me. It’s happy & never fails to make me smile thinking about putting the Christmas decorations up, particularly memories of my childhood.

Ding Dong Merrily On High

The origin of this carol is unknown, but it’s thought to have originated in France during the seventeenth century, with it’s original text being in Latin. The sole purpose of this song is praising God.

Once In Royal David’s City

The text of this carol were originally written by C. F. Alexander, the wife of the Bishop of Derry, during the nineteenth century. I love this song, my favourite version is of Dan as a soloist when he was a chorister. Unfortunately this version isn’t available on YouTube, but we do have a recording of it, as well as him singing Silent Night. Away In A Manger

The text of this carol was originally published in a Lutheran Sunday school book in 1885. The music was composed 10 years later by William J. Kirkpatrick. To me, this song epitomises the meaning of Christmas – the birth of Christ. What better way to mark the occasion than with a song depicting the the scene of Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth.
