Instead of New Year’s resolutions, which I don’t ever tend to keep to, I though this year I would share with you my 2016 goals. We all want to improve our lives & setting goals is a great way to think about what you want & then make a plan as to how you’re going to achieve it! If I’m honest, it feels like a lot of my 20s have been a train wreck! Part of this is as a result of the abusive relationship I was in & the effect it has had on me, while some of it has been the decline in my health & what that has meant to my life. I don’t want to focus on the causes though, I want to focus on the solutions. In July I turn 30 & I want to make sure my 30s don’t go the same way as my 20s! There will always be things in our lives we can’t control, but setting my 2016 goals is my way of guiding my life in a more positive direction.

Save Some Money
There are always going to be those times when something unexpected happens & you have to pay to get it fixed. In 2016 I cracked the screen of my phone, which i had to get fixed then & there. The hard drive on my laptop also failed, which meant it needed replacing. Unfortunately, when these things happened I didn’t really have the money to put them right. This made life a little tricky to say the least! I don’t want to put myself in that position again, so am aiming to have £500 in a separate account for emergencies. This amount is something I may not be able to achieve in just a year, with me working so little at the moment. Never the less, I want to make a start on this fund in 2016.
Improve My Bassoon Playing
I trained as an oboist, I got a scholarship to music college & the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do with my life is be a musician (well, that & a Blue Peter presenter!). As a result of the damage to my shoulder because of my EDS, I am no longer able to hold my oboe. I’m also not sure how my PoTS would react to the pressure involved in oboe playing. While I am coming to accept that I will never be a professional musician, I don’t want to loose the enjoyment that music has brought to my life. With my bassoon chair strap, my hands & shoulder don’t take the weight of the instrument. The reed is also larger, so there is a lot less resistance when blowing. I am self taught on the bassoon & achieved distinction in my grade 3 exam a few years ago. I haven’t played since though as it became emotionally too painful when I lost the ability to play my oboe. I’ve always been someone with high aspirations & I think I could do well on the bassoon if I motivate myself. My health may not let me, but I think I’d be letting myself down if I didn’t at least try. Unfortunately I seem to have misplaced/lost my chair strap & reeds, so I will need to purchase more before I can put this into practice.
Find A Focus In Life
Since being unable to play my oboe, I feel like my life has lost focus. I want to evaluate my life, find out what it is I want on a basic level & what I can do to achieve this. I’ve written more about this in my Determining My Life Focus & Direction post.
Blogging
I want to continue to improve my blog. Who doesnt!?! I’ll definitely be focussing on my photography, as I feel I have a lot to learn in this area. I want to get a better handle of SEO, as well as improve my Pinterest strategy. If you’ve any tips on these or any other ideas to help me grow my blog, please let me know!
Last but not least…
Become A Mum
I need to remember that, while I’m coming off my medication & don’t feel like I’m achieving a lot with my life, I’m actually preparing my body to do something truly amazing! It would be totally irresponsible of me to become pregnant on the medication I was on. The Sodium Valporate alone has a high risk of causing some pretty scary deformities. How selfish would it be of me to become pregnant while on this, knowing these risks! Please don’t et me wrong, I know there are some conditions that the risks to a foetus is greater if the mother is not on mediation, so I’m not judging anyone who chooses to stay on medication after consulting their specialist. For my conditions, the risk of medication is the greatest & I need to cut myself some slack. Fingers crossed I’ll be announcing a new arrival some time this year!

Happy new year! There’s so much involved in blogging. I love that there’s so much to learn, but it can be a little overwhelming at times. Good luck. Xx

Thank you so much! I didn’t want to make resolutions that would only last a few weeks but wanted to make some positive changes in my life. I’m hoping this way will work better for me. Xx

it’s so hard with a chronic illness to find the balance isn’t it.
I’m deliberatley not setting goals and targets this year, but just having a word to guide me – I’ve just posted about it !
It really is Jen! I love your idea of having a focus word to guide you. I think I saw it on your Facebook, or maybe Instagram & thought at the time it was a great solution to setting resolutions. You’ll be able to make progress in one way or another every day, which will be so fulfilling. Good luck! Xx
