My Favourite Christmas Films

Winter is one of the best times to snuggle up with your favourite drink, some snacks and a good film. There are some fantastic Christmas films out there, so I thought I would share with you some of my favourite Christmas films! Most of these are suitable for children. Read into that what you will.

Favourite Christmas Films: Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a film that I only saw for the first time this year! My sister put it on for my niece close to Halloween and I fell in love with it instantly. The music is so catchy that I was singing it for weeks afterwards. Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king from Halloweentown is such a great character. I find it really interesting to see the different worlds and how that characters perceive them. Rated PG, this is a great film for most age groups.

Favourite Christmas Films: The Muppet’s Christmas Carol

To me, The Muppet’s Christmas Carol epitomises Christmas films. In this film, Dicken’s A Christmas Carol is brought to life by characters including Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, with Michael Caine playing Scrooge. This is a great way to introduce children to Dicken’s classic story. As wit Nightmare Before Christmas, the music for The Muppet’s Christmas Carol is really catchy, great for keeping the attention of children and adults alike. This film is rated as U, but some children may be frightened by the Ghost of Christmas Future.

Favourite Christmas Films: Love Actually

Love Actually is a film that looks at complex relationships during Christmas time. It follows nine main characters, who’s lives are all intertwined with one another in one way or another. I really like that this film doesn’t follow one couple throughout. The changes between venues and characters keeps my attention and makes the film more interesting. The central theme for each of the nine characters is love and their journey and relationship with it at Christmas. The fantastic cast include Julia Roberts, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and Martin Freeman. This is definitely not one to be missed! This film is rated 15 because of it’s sometimes sensitive material.

Favourite Christmas Films: The Polar Express

The Polar Express is a film that I hadn’t seen until last year. We went out to buy our Christmas tree and when we came home, it was on the TV. It’s a film that Dan loves and, having watched it, I can see why. The train ride that the children take to the North Pole is an adventure in itself and it’s lovely to see the boy who doubts Father Christmas’ existence on a voyage of discovery. The concept of only being able to hear the reindeer’s bells if you believe is a lovely touch. This film is rated U and is suitable for all ages.

Favourite Christmas Films: The Snowman

I have great memories of watching The Snowman as a child. Mum would often put it on after we had decorated the Christmas tree. Unfortunately, now that I am photosensitive, I’m not able to watch The Snowman, as the animation is old and creates a flickering effect that affects my basilar type and hemiplegic migraine.

The Snowman is a lovely story of a boy who makes a snowman, that comes to life on Christmas Eve. The Snowman takes his maker to the North Pole to the Snowman party, where the little boy meets Father Christmas. There’s no narrative in The Snowman, just an enchanting soundtrack. This is great for those with chronic illnesses (unless photosensitivity is a problem), as you don’t need as much concentration to enjoy the story. This film is rated U and is suitable to all age groups.

Christmas films don’t need to necessarily have a Christmas theme to them though. Dan and I seem to be starting a tradition of a trip to the Cinema to see the latest Star Wars film on the last day of term with a friend of ours. Last year it was The Force Awakens and this year it’s Rogue One! Our tickets are already booked. With Star Wars films due out for the next five years or so, this is definitely going to turn into a great Christmas tradition.
