Metaphorical Coffee: A True Love Story

Yesterday (well, today as I’m writing this) Dan and I have been together for 10 years. I’m not sure whether it’s better to describe the last 10 years as a rollercoaster, a whirlwind or something entirely different. In celebration of your 10 years together, I thought I’d share some of our early memories in Dan’s an my true love story. Including the infamous ‘metaphorical coffee’ story.

Metaphorical Coffee

Dan and I were brought together by a mutual friend at music college. I’d just come out of an abusive relationship, which had left me with PTSD and wasn’t looking for a relationship. I can’t remember how our metaphorical coffee came about. Whether we were set up or if Dan asked me to go. I also didn’t remember that metaphorical coffee took place on the 15th February, because Dan knew I’d been through something big and wanted to avoid the pressure of Valentine’s Day for me.

Metaphorical Coffee

It was decided that we would meet for coffee at a coffee shop near to our music college. I turned up to our metaphorical coffee date few minutes late. I’d gotten half way to the coffee shop from my halls of residence only to realise that I’d forgot my oboe. I wanted to take my oboe with me to show that was a serious musician. I wanted to give the impression that I’d just come from the music college, rather than my halls of residence where I’d been straightening my hair within an inch of it’s life. Dan was a post grad, while I was an undergrad. Hence my wanting to show how serious I was about my studies and future career.

Metaphorical Coffee

Now you might be wondering why I keep calling our first get together ‘metaphorical coffee’. Well, the plan was to have coffee. But it turned out that neither of us drinks coffee. Figuratively speaking we’d gone for coffee and thus Dan coined the phrase ‘metaphorical coffee’ for our first date. That was one of the things that drew me to Dan, his slightly abstract cleverness, without being arrogant or obvious.

Metaphorical Coffee

One of the other things that drew me to Dan was one of our conversations during our metaphorical coffee date. I explained to Dan that I’d just come out of a very difficult relationship. He already knew this, but I felt it needed to be said so that we both knew where we stood. Dan was great about this. He told me that, while he’d really like it to develop into more, if it didn’t he’d be pleased to have made a new friend. He made me feel safe, and I knew he was something special.

Metaphorical Coffee

As I’ve said, metaphorical coffee happened on the 15th, but we didn’t become an item until the 22nd. Dan wanted to take things at my pace and I didn’t want to distract him from an important performance exam he had on the 23rd. I was mostly concerned that if our first kiss was a clumsy one and that we could end up messing Dan’s mouth up before his big exam. My plan was to hold off until after Dan’s exam and then surprise him with a kiss, but I just couldn’t resist that long. We were in the locker room at music college (not romantic at all). I stood on my tip toes and kissed Dan. Thankfully, it wasn’t clumsy and his mouth stayed in tact. The rest, is history!

Metaphorical Coffee

So that’s what I was up to 10 years ago. Life has taken many unexpected twists and turns, but Dan and I have faced it all together. If I’m honest, I don’t think I’d still be here without him.

10 years ago my youngest daughter was just a little baby.

  2. What a sweet love story and you are so blessed to have Dan! I love your wedding dress too. 10 years ago, I was a senior in high school and I was dating someone else. I actually met Cecilio on one of those Myspace bulletins because we were about to go to the same college together, and he added me, we talked a little bit, I added him on Facebook, we finally met in person during classes, and the rest is history :)
