Social media has become a part of every day life. Using social media with chronic illness has many benefits. As a teenager, I remember feeling like I was the ‘only one’ who was chronically ill. Social media was in it’s infancy (who remembers MSN messenger and MySpace?). As a result, I wasn’t able to make chronically ill friends who I could share experiences and tips with. Since the dawn of social media, I’ve made so many chronically ill friends. We’ve shared tips on coping with our conditions and helped each other get the right diagnosis and the right care. We’ve celebrated each other’s achievements and supported each other when things have been tough.
However, social media as with anything, also has it’s negative sides. The #SpoonieSpeak community came together to discuss the positives and negatives of using social media with chronic illness.
The ‘Using Social Media With Chronic Illness’ chat took place on 11th February, hosted by the @SpoonieSpeak twitter account.
