If you’ve seen my project pan introduction & update 1, you’ll know that I am currently trying to ‘hit pan’ on my MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot. I though now would be the perfect opportunity to talk to you about why I want to challenge myself to hit pan on this product & why I won’t be repurchasing it once it’s finished. A bold statement, I know – but hear me out.
The MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot isn’t bad. It just isn’t as good as other products, in my opinion, that cost a fraction of the price. Why would I pay more money for something that, for me, is lower quality!?! So, Soft Ocrs & Painterly are two shades that are commonly used as bases. Soft Ochre is more yellow toned & Painterly is more pink toned. Although my skin is yellow toned, it’s also fair, so I may have been better off picking painterly up. When I put MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot on my lids & up to the brow bone, my eyes look darker than my face. This isn’t particularly flattering. I’ve been playing around & have decided that it looks better if I just use Soft Ochre on the lid & into the crease, avoiding the brow bone area. However, the main thing I love about MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot is that it covered up the prominent (thanks EDS!) on my eyelids. If I don’t take it onto the brow bone, the veins here aren’t covered.
Here I’ve applied Soft Ochre up to the brow bone (L) & up to the crease (R)
In terms of the consistence, I like the fall of Soft Ochre & it applies nicely. I find it works best when applied with my finger directly onto the lid as my finger warms the cream. I know some people prefer to use a brush & this is perfectly fine too, what ever works best for you. I find that Soft Ochre helps eyeshadows show up better on my eyes & in the cooler months lasts without creasing. Unfortunately, once the warmer months roll around this isn’t the case. I seem to have oily eye lids, despite the rest of my body being dry as the Sahara dessert! So during most of spring & the entirety of summer, my MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot is relegated to the back of my draws in disgrace. For the first few summers I had Soft Ochre, I used it as a brow bone shade during the summer, which avoided the creasing issue, but as I’ve already said, this made my eyes look darker than my face so I eventually gave up on this idea!
I removed Soft Ochre from my the brow bone of my left eye for this look, which I created using the MAC Cinderella palette.
I didn’t realise until editing these photos that lines were visible on my eyelids. While the lines are there, the colour of the Paint Pot & eyeshadows haven’t creased into them.
While I haven’t tried the ‘Creme De’ line in the Maybelline Colour Tattoos, I’ve heard the Nude shade is a dupe for Soft Ochre & the Rose shade is a dupe for Paint Pot. I find the Colour Tattoos last really well on me, even in the summer. At £16 a pop for the Paint Pots, I’d much rather get 3 Colour Tattoos for less money. So, while I wouldn’t buy another Paint Pot, I don’t want to waste the money I’ve already spent – hence the MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot finding it’s way into my project pan for this year.
How do you find the MAC Paint Pots? Do you prefer them to the Maybelline Colour Tattoos? Have you found another cream shadow that you like just as much, if not more? I’d love to know what you all think!

Thank you for this post, I have been wanting to try Soft Ochre for ages, mainly because of Nikkie Tutorials, but after reading this I think I will stick to Maybelline, also Kiko’s cream shadow sticks make a great base for eyeshadow and NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk is fantastic too. I have Painterly and also have the Maybelline, I do have a comparison blog post if that helps lovely? I think the Maybelline is good but they dry out faster, I have had MAC paint pots for years and years and they haven’t dried out where as my Maybelline ones have but for the price difference I’d go for Maybelline, hopefully my post will be helpful, I have swatches too so you can see them side by side :) xxx

I’m pretty sure I’ve read your comparison post, either that or I’ve seen you talk about them both on your YouTube channel. You were one of the first people I saw to compare the Maybelline & MAC as dupes, which I doubt I would have spotted myself. I’m not too worried about the Maybelline drying out faster, especially for the price like you say! I’d prefer that & ending up having to throw some away than to end up with creasing & to only be able to wear the MAC for half the year. Painterly may work better on me though, so it would probable be a good idea for me to test it in store before making my mind up. Xx
Such a shame that you haven’t got on well with this product. I use Painterly every single day and I agree, it can crease and look really dry on the eyes, but I always go over the top with a neutral shadow like Malt, to set it down. I never ever apply shadow without putting those two down as a base now and when I set the paint pot with a shadow all over it doesn’t crease in the slightest, so you could try that!!

I’d never thought to go over the top of the Paint Pot with a skin coloured eyeshadow before applying colours, thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely give that a try & hopefully it will help me work through the product more effectively (I’m not impressed about not being able to use it in the warmer months!). Xx
This is a great review! I do sometimes I find that the MAC paint pots can look heavy on the eyelid. I haven’t tried any of the color tattoos but maybe I should!

Brilliant review ;) I use Painterly and can’t prasie it enough, it’s super pale ! Thats the only trasom I wouldnt go for Soft Ochre as it’s just too dark and yellow for me :) Xx

I wish I hadn’t swatched this in the height of summer when I was tanned. I think I’d definitely have been better off with Painterly, but will still probably stick the the Maybelline Colour Tattoos in the future because of the tendency to crease on me in the warmer months. Xx
Ive not had one of these for years! TBH, i’m not a massive fan of eyelid primers, I find they dry my eyelids out a bit. Ill use them if I do a makeup look, but for everyday use not so much. I’ve heard good things about the Laura Mercier eye basics, but i think they are a bit pricey x
