Wild Life By Alison Brodie: Book Review

Do you ever get that feeling where you find a great author but are then scared to read another book from them incase it doesn’t live up to the quality of the first? If you’ve read my Brake Failure Book Review, you’ll know that Alison Brodie’s writing captivated me. When Alison kindly sent me her book Wild Life, I was both excited and nervous to read it. What if it didn’t live up to Brake Failure? Well, I’m absolutely thrilled to say I loved Wild Life * just as much as Brake Failure, and here’s why.

Faustine’s life is finally coming together. She’s landed her first modelling contract in New York and is turning her life around! But then she receives a phone call from her sister, Giselle. Beech Wood Rise, the area the girls grew up in is a risk from an overzealous developer. Faustine must return to England to protest the plans while protecting her newly found modelling career, by taking on her sister’s identity.

McPherson has a vision and he’ll go to the ends of the earth so see it come to fruition. Evicted from his home in Australia as a child, he doesn’t want to see others go through the same thing. He’s invested his own money into the Beech Wood Rise development and won’t stand for protestors holding up his plans.

Oscar is a troubled boy. His Mum is in rehab, his Uncle is in prison and his Auntie Kylie doesn’t care about him. He’s desperate for love, sick of his social worker and avoiding school at all costs. Will he see through Faustine and McPherson’s hostility towards each other and bring them closer together?

Can Faustine manage to stop the development work or will McPherson see his dream of creating homes for all realised? Will they put their differences aside to help Oscar realise his potential?

Alison Brodie has a talent for creating characters that you fall in love with and root for. I felt personally invested in the characters of Faustine, McPherson and Oscar and often had to read ‘just one more’ chapter to see how they reacted to situations they found themselves it. Not only are Alison’s characters well developed and interesting, the story surrounding them is fascinating and really compliment the characters. I get lost in the worlds Alison creates, her books really are a joy to read.

Alison’s sensitive handling of Oscar’s story brought me to tears. This is a writer who really cares about her characters and her audience. I spent the entire book wondering who would win, Faustine or McPherson. Personally, I was rooting for both of them, but knew that ultimately one would have to loose. I won’t spoil the ending for you, but Alison did both characters justice with her ending.
